Australia On Its Road To Internet For Everyone

Yes, Australia has its commitment to provide high speed internet for 93 percent of its population by 2018. It has taken an initiative to bring government and private hands together to avoid duplication of efforts towards this end.

In a historical decision, Australian government has made a deal which will enable it to use a high speed internet network at national level. The deal will allow NBC to use Telstra’s underground cable network for next 35 – 40 years. NBC is government owned and Telstra is the biggest telecom company of Australia.

The deal has cost government 11 billion dollars. The company will spend 2 billion to upgrade its network as a condition with the deal.

The government is ready to fetch 36 billion dollars so that it could provide its population with high speed internet connections. Most of the network would consist of optical fiber cables and the remote areas would be connected by satellites.

In this way the Australian government has become the one to recognize the importance of high speed internet for its people. The initiative would show the path to other developed and developing nations of the world.

As of now nearly 30 percent of the world population uses internet. North American continent leads the world with over 78 % of its population using internet; Second place is that of Australia (60%) followed by Europe (58%).

The use of internet has increased more than five folds in the last decade. The internet has contributed a lot in what has been termed as globalization process. It has been of lots of help to scientists, students, governments and everyone. Let’s hope of the day 100% of the world population will be using it.
